Dawnwalker Brencis Final Boss: Both Phases & Early Fight
How to reach Brencis, prepare the final-quest save, control his wraiths, survive Grotesque Ascendant and understand the optional prologue challenge.
The normal Brencis fight has two major stages: first control the summoned wraiths while dueling Brencis, then fight Grotesque Ascendant in Anachora. Parry shield-marked attacks, evade skull-marked unblockables and preserve a manual save before the parley because ally and bargain choices lead to different endings.
Final boss and ending spoiler warning
This guide reveals Brencis's second form, the final arena, ally routes and the result of winning the normally unwinnable prologue duel. It does not describe the closing cinematics.
The standard unlock route is confirmed across launch walkthroughs. Phase-specific advice is marked Launch watch because balance, damage and attack behavior may change with patches.
How to start the standard Brencis fight
Defeat Ambrus, Bakir and Xanthe by raising their Court anger and completing their confrontation quests. When Infamy reaches its final state, advance to the following day for the Edicts scene and Brencis's invitation to parley in A Deal with the Devil.
Make a permanent manual save before entering the conversation. Fighting alone, arriving through Lacra or Crake's route, and accepting Brencis's offer produce different ending branches.
| Route | What starts it | Why the save matters |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Choose the immediate confrontation in A Deal with the Devil | Leads to the Folk Hero route |
| Lacra | Finish her alliance chain and enter through her final quest | Preserves the Patricide branch |
| Crake | Finish the Manumit chain and enter through his final quest | Preserves the Knyazmaker branch |
| Bargain | Accept Brencis's offer instead of attacking | Commits the Turncoat route |
| Early castle | Reach Greifberg Castle before completing the Court | Skips normal preparation and ally routes |
Before entering the arena
Repair the weapon you can parry with consistently, refill healing and spend the skill points that materially improve damage or survival. Bring at least one ability that can close distance or clear space when multiple enemies surround Coen.
Do not hoard every healing resource for a hypothetical third arena. Current launch testing reports a health reset at the transition to Anachora, so use what you need to finish the first stage cleanly.
- Keep target lock available but unlock briefly when surrounded
- Prioritize consistent defense over long normal-attack strings
- Save before the parley; the fight itself does not permit a convenient branch save
- Treat shield icons as block or parry prompts
- Treat skull icons as mandatory dodge or disengage prompts
Phase 1: Brencis and the red wraiths
The first stage is a crowd-control test. Brencis repeatedly brings red wraiths into the arena, and focusing only on his large health bar lets the summons attack from off-screen.
Remove nearby wraiths before returning to the boss, keep the group in front of Coen and use short counters after successful parries. At range, move laterally for blood projectiles; at close range, leave space for summoned blood weapons rather than extending a combo.
| Threat | Readable signal | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Blockable strike | Shield-marked directional attack | Perfect Block, then use a short punish |
| Blood projectile | Skull marker while Brencis is at range | Dodge sideways; do not hold a stationary guard |
| Blood weapon flurry | Skull marker at close range | Disengage or Shadowstep through the sequence |
| Fresh wraith wave | Red summons spread around Coen | Clear the closest flank before damaging Brencis |
Phase 2: Grotesque Ascendant in Anachora
Draining the first health bar moves the fight to Anachora, where Brencis becomes Grotesque Ascendant. The summons drop away, but the larger body and branching limbs extend his reach far beyond the first arena.
Circle instead of retreating in a straight line, wait for the attack icon before choosing block or dodge, and punish only after a full sequence ends. The enlarged target can make distance look safer than it is, so preserve lateral room near the edge of the arena.
- Expect longer reach than the humanoid form
- Do not assume every large swing is blockable
- Use the transition health reset instead of entering phase 2 with unused healing
- Keep one mobility ability ready for a bad camera angle
- Avoid greedy follow-up attacks after the first safe hit
Can you beat Brencis in the prologue?
Yes, the first prologue duel in Bad Blood can be won even though losing is the intended story route. Winning sends Coen to Anachora and exposes Grotesque Ascendant with prologue-level equipment.
That second fight is the real wall: launch testing reports extremely low player damage, lethal boss hits and no quicksave between the two stages. The official Xbox preview confirms that internal QA players have completed the early challenge, so it is possible rather than a scripted dead end.
| Outcome | What happens |
|---|---|
| Lose the first duel | The normal prologue continues |
| Win the first duel | Reach Anachora and unlock the Realmwalker visit trophy early |
| Lose to Grotesque Ascendant | Reload and repeat the first duel before another attempt |
| Win both stages | Complete the extreme early Brencis route |
Why the fight or ending route did not appear
If the standard invitation is missing, confirm that all three Court vassals are defeated and then advance to the next day for the Edicts event. If an ally route is absent, return to a save before the final sequence and finish that ally's complete questline.
If you entered Greifberg Castle early, you are deliberately bypassing the normal invitation and branch setup. Reload the pre-castle warning save if you want Lacra, Crake or the bargain paths instead.
Frequently asked questions
How many phases does Brencis have?
The final encounter has a humanoid first stage with summoned wraiths, followed by Grotesque Ascendant in Anachora. The second form becomes more dangerous across its health thresholds.
Can you defeat Brencis during the prologue?
Yes. Winning the first duel sends Coen to the Grotesque Ascendant fight, but the second stage is an extreme challenge with prologue equipment.
Should you kill the wraiths first?
Clear the wraiths threatening Coen's flanks before returning to Brencis. Ignoring them makes the first phase much less controllable.
When should you save for every Brencis ending?
Keep a permanent manual save before A Deal with the Devil and another after completing Lacra and Crake's alliance preparations.
Why did A Deal with the Devil not start?
Defeat Ambrus, Bakir and Xanthe, reach maximum Infamy, then advance to the next day for the Edicts scene and Brencis's message.
